Education Garden Lead Hand
What we are looking for:
If you are a natural leader interested in learning more about environmental education and regenerative agriculture in a hands-on way, this may be the position for you!
In 2023, we hosted over 2,000 students, 300 teachers, and hundreds of parents who were guided around our 12-station education garden and given interactive tasks to do along the way. Many groups also had the opportunity to harvest their vegetables, including beets, kale, onions, potatoes, and pumpkins. We want to double this figure in 2024, host at least 4,000 students, and run workshops and tours for the wider community.
We will have a team of approximately eight farm workers in the field, farming and helping with the educational tours. This team will be supplemented with volunteers. Therefore, Stable Harvest Farm is looking for an Education Coordinator to liaise with all the groups as mentioned earlier, schedule shifts, organize school visits and coordinate the team day-to-day.
The ideal candidate will be a hard-working person who is as comfortable outside managing daily operations as indoors planning and developing the educational program.
A Day In The Life
- Educational tours
The successful applicant will plan tours with local schools, prepare all necessary materials, and lead the tour through the education garden on the day. Therefore, they must be an excellent communicator and effective in engaging children. They will be the point of contact for all volunteers and assistants who will look to them for precise instructions. Management experience is, therefore, a significant advantage.
- Workshops and community visits
We run bespoke tours for specific schools and community workshops on seed-saving in partnership with Farm Folk City Folk. Therefore, the Education Lead Hand must be comfortable designing and running learning experiences to suit the group’s needs. This will require flexibility and ingenuity to develop and host experiences for various community groups.
Other ongoing farm projects:
The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to be involved with and learn about the following activities that take place on the farm:
- Regenerative agriculture – Cover cropping, nutrient cycling, minimal tillage.
- Conservation – Fallow land, wildlife corridors, removing invasives.
- Pollinator corridors – We have 40 beehives on site.
- Wetland rehabilitation – Creating habitat for seasonal migratory birds.
- Horticulture – Native plants, edible flowers, tree planting.
- Seed Saving – Legumes, drying beans, drying corn, quinoa, sunflower, wheat.
- Chickens – We have a flock of heritage breeds.
- Organic food production – Educational demonstration garden, greenhouse growing.
Qualifications
Requirements:
The successful candidate will have a strong interest in sustainable farming and education, but also:
- Will have management and/or leadership experience.
- Will have worked with children previously.
- Be an effective communicator with people of all ages.
- Be a rigorous planner.
- Show initiative and flexibility.
- Be competent with typical computer software (word, excel, etc.).
- Be effective both working independently and with others.
- Be reliable, consistent, and punctual.
Having a horticultural background and experience in outdoor education would be beneficial but is not essential.
